Transitional Coaching

Transitional coaching is a coaching approach that helps individuals navigate significant life or career changes smoothly and effectively. It provides guidance, support, and strategies to manage uncertainty, develop new skills, and build confidence during transitions.

Examples of Transitional Coaching?
  • Stay at home parents going back to work

  • Progressing up the ranks at work

  • Transitioning out of paid employment to
    running you own business

  • Retirement

How It Differs from Other Coaching

Unlike life coaching (which focuses on general personal growth) or executive coaching (which is business-focused), transitional coaching is specifically designed for navigating change and building resilience during uncertain periods.

Key Aspects of Transitional Coaching

  • Clarity & Direction – Helps individuals define goals and create a clear vision for their next phase.

  • Emotional Support – Addresses fears, anxieties, and uncertainties related to change.

  • Skill Development – Enhances adaptability, resilience, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Action Planning – Develops a structured, step-by-step plan for a smooth transition.

  • Accountability & Motivation – Keeps individuals focused and committed to progress.

Common Areas of Transitional Coaching

  • Career Changes – Switching jobs, promotions, or transitioning to a new industry

  • Life Transitions – Moving to a new city, adjusting to parenthood, stay-at-home parents returning to the workplace, or retirement

  • Organizational Changes – Helping employees adapt to company restructuring or leadership shifts

  • Personal Growth – Assisting individuals in rediscovering purpose and direction after major life events

Harvard Business review

“Today, coaching is a popular and potent solution for ensuring top performance from an organization’s most critical talent.

There’s no question that future leaders will need constant coaching.  As the business environment becomes more complex, they will increasingly turn to coaches for help in understanding how to act.

Coaches will do more than influence behaviors; they will be an essential part of the leader’s learning process, providing knowledge, opinions, and judgment in critical areas.

Over time the coaching focus shifts from what the coaches were originally hired to do.  It starts out with a business bias and inevitably migrates to ‘bigger issues’ such as life purpose, work/life balance, and becoming a better leader.

As coaching has become more common, any stigma attached to receiving it at the individual level has disappeared. Now, it is often considered a badge of honor”.
